Hey everyone,
I’m excited to announce the microcad v0.5.1 release!
As you may know, I initially aimed to release v0.6.0 back in July, but
life got in the way (as it often does). When I finally sat down to tackle
the issues that had been lingering, I realized that releasing a half-baked
version wasn’t going to cut it. Instead, I decided to take some time to
revisit our architecture and direction.
This pause allowed me to dive deep into the old code and compiler architecture
in general. And the more I dived in, the more convinced I became that this rewrite became necessary.
Now I’m happy to report that I’ve made significant
progress in reworking the compiler pipeline – but, it’s not quite where I want it to be just yet.
So, what’s changed in v0.5.1? The main improvement is that I
replaced manifold-rs with manifold-rust. This means, we do not have any
C++ dependencies anymore. LOL.
This means you can now compile microcad using simply cargo, without the need
for CMake installation. https://codeberg.org/microcad/microcad/pulls/598
Now, I know what you’re thinking: when will we see v0.6.0? Rest assured,
I’m committed to delivering a solid release by the end of October.
In fact, I’ll be sharing insights about µcad’s new compiler architecture at Nov 3rd 2026 @ RustLab (Bologna, IT), soon!

As a little teaser for our next major release, I can reveal that the
default file extension will no longer be .µcad, but instead…
drumroll ….mu! That’s right – we’re standardizing on the .mu
suffix from now on.
Thanks for sticking with us, everyone. Your patience and support mean the
world to me!
Cheers
Micha
